In the Studio: Steve Pruitt Talks WTS Drums and Recording

Updated: Aug 19, 2022

Finding the perfect tone is important when recording a drum track, but is often too time-consuming to change for every recording. The WTS Artistry Series™ drums solve this problem, allowing you to find the right tuning for the track in seconds* and no longer settle for a generic tuning due to time constraints.

There is a connection between tone, rhythm, and technique. When they meet, something magical happens.

World-renowned drummer Steve Pruitt has been having a blast recording on his WTS Artistry Series drums. As a highly sought-after musician by many of today's top artists, Steve spends much of his time recording for them in his home studio.

Q&A with Steve Pruitt

Recently, our CEO, Samuel Welch, had a chance to sit down with Steve to learn about his work in the studio. Steve shared his experience recording every day for the last 6 months with his WTS Artistry Series drums…

Samuel: What has been your overall experience with the WTS [Welch Tuning System] drums?

Steve: WTS drums are truly extraordinary instruments, they sound incredible with every turn! They exude a little bit of the old civil war drums while being something totally new! I’ve used them on many sessions and they deliver strong every time!

Samuel: How does WTS benefit you as a studio musician?

Steve: The quality of sound is pure and high-def! Because it’s so quick to tune, you can check out more sounds quicker vs. just settling with a certain tuning due to time constraints. It really allows you to find the right tuning for the track in seconds.

Only WTS can give you the tools to fine tune the [WTS Artistry Series] drums with much more detail than a standard tension rod drum. Engineers and producers can easily mess with the tuning to fit the parameters for their studio and overall vision.

Samuel: What do you think are the top 3 benefits of WTS for a professional drummer such as yourself?

Steve: First off, for the variety of gigs a pro plays, you can access any tuning required for any style of music in seconds!

Secondly, you can instantly get back to the sweet spot of a previous tuning! This can be next to impossible on a tension rod drum, because even if you are in the same range as before, there is no guarantee that all the lugs are exactly what they were before.

And lastly, the creative possibilities are endless: the wires [cable] can be instruments and enable for pitch alteration like a talking drum! This is just the beginning of a myriad of possibilities!

Samuel: How about for an intermediate drummer? Obviously, there are benefits that apply to every level of drummer, but anything specific to drummers who are learning how drum tone relates to music or drummers who are gigging a lot?

Steve: One—being able to explore different sounds in whatever style of music you’re playing—instantly!

Two—perfectly tune faster than anyone in your band!

Three—another drummer wants to play your drums? No problem! You can get back to your original tuning fast and easy!
